Technology Helps Improve I-55
KCI, general contractor and design-builder of the $245 million MoDOT I-55 project, utilizes innovative technology for the project

KCI Construction is collaborating with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) on a transformative infrastructure project to alleviate congestion along I-55 in Jefferson County, near St. Louis. As the general contractor and design-builder for the $246 million initiative, KCI is spearheading improvements across a 16-mile stretch that passes through Pevely, Herculaneum, Festus, and Crystal City.
Originally built in the 1960s, this segment of I-55 now sees over 50,000 vehicles daily. The project aims to enhance safety and efficiency for thousands of commuters by introducing critical upgrades, including:
- Adding a third lane in both directions.
- Replacing the intersection of US 67 and Route CC.
- Constructing new interchanges at Route Z, McNutt, and US 67/I-55.
- Improving ramps at southbound I-55 to southbound US 67 and northbound 67 to northbound I-55.
- Rehabilitating 13 bridges and replacing 14 bridges.
The hilly and rocky terrain of Jefferson County has presented unique challenges for the project. However, KCI’s innovative solutions have allowed the team to navigate these obstacles effectively. Brian Mulhall, Vice President of Transportation for KCI told Construction Equipment Guide that KCI has done some geotechnical boring to provide the team with the information they need for construction. “The depth of bedrock varies throughout the area. Some borings may be just 20 feet deep, while others extend as much as 100 feet. This information is vital for effective design and material planning,” Mulhall said.
Additionally, KCI is leveraging advanced technology, including drone surveys for real-time progress tracking and Total Station Control for precision in earthmoving and paving. These tools ensure greater efficiency and accuracy throughout the construction process.
Upon being awarded the project, KCI Vice President Brent Krueger expressed the company’s enthusiasm: “KCI is honored to be part of the team for this project. Our organization and partners are grateful for the opportunity to serve MoDOT and the community. We look forward to delivering on our shared goals and commitments.”
The I-55 corridor upgrade is expected to be completed by December 2026, bringing long-term benefits to the region by improving traffic flow, safety, and infrastructure longevity.
